The Ark in Khiva is perhaps the best surviving example of a fortified palace in Central Asia. It nestles against the walls, in the Babylonian tradition, so that the ruling family could escape if the city walls were breached. There are courtyards within the palace but it does not appear that space for garden planting was available. One can however see gardens outside the walls of Khiva.
