2012 saw many new changes to the gardens.
In the Spring gardens the existing rockery has been caressed and intertwined with a new bold structure. Giant steps have been built to create a wonderful vista looking down from the top of the gardens towards a new statue of the 5th Duchess of Rutland (who created the garden infrastructure you see today) standing next to a new small lake.
With its acid soil the gardens already support a strikingly colourful array of Rhododendrons, Azaleas and magnificent Magnolias. Another 250 unusual and rare trees were added to this collection last year.
With the famous Capability Brown casting his expert eye over the castle grounds and more recently plans from Harold Peto being unearthed, there is plenty to explore. Both these projects are currently being researched and studied by the present Duchess with improvements envisaged in the next few years.
