The Walled Gardens of Cannington

A part-Elizabethan house, with modern buildings, in the grounds of a Benedictine priory (1138AD). The garden is used by a college and has several enclosures bounded by sandstone walls with plant collections.

Head Gardener's Comment

As well as ensuring continuation of a garden on this historic site, the Gardens provide a dynamic learning environment for students, as well as an area of real beauty and interest for visitors. We have every confidence that they will continue to evolve and will provide to be a place that visitors will look forward to returning to time and time again.

History

The Walled Gardens lie within the grounds of a mediaeval Priory, and many of its fine buildings, including the walls of the gardens, remain. Over the last few years, the Walled Gardens have undergone a dramatic period of redevelopment. The areas now open to the public represent phase one of the development. Other areas where work is yet to be undertaken, will see the construction of planting of a Formal Rose Garden.
