April is a great month for woodland bulbs including many different trilliums and erythroniums. Asiatic petiolarid primulas are in flower and the first candelabras will be out at the end of the month.
The Red Squirrels are very active this month but as some are moulting they are looking rather shabby. The garden is full of bird song giving a wonderful atmosphere.
Bobby and Betty Masterton bought Cluny in 1950 and planted it up as woodland garden of specimen trees and shrubs underplanted with many different types of bulbs, primulas, meconopsis and lilies. After the deaths of the Mastertons, their youngest daughter and husband Wendy and John Mattingley took over the running of the garden in 1987.
Asiatic primulas, Trilliums, Arisaemas, Lilliums and specimen trees including the UK's widest conifer.
