Peter Kerr gave his estate to the Diocese of Oregon in 1959 and it became The Elk Rock Gardens of the Bishop's Close. Ker was born in Scotland in 1862 and 'close' is a old word for a an enclosed place (eg a street or yard). The original garden design was by the Olmsted Brothers. The local climate enables the planting to be not unlike that on the west coast of Scotland.

Sorry to inform you that the garden at Elk Rock (now the "Bishops Close") was NOT designed by the Olmsted firm. Its more interesting than that! Instead it was designed, constructed and maintained by Peter Kerr himself (1861-1957). It is a great garden, and in my opinion, the oldest, intact private garden in the Pacific Northwest. Open 7 days/wk; donations welcomed. Most colorful in the winter with witch hazel, masses of small bulbs, esp. winter aconite. A garden of integrity that retains its sense of privacy in an ever-expanding metropolitan area."good bones; great views of river and Elk Rock island at south end of property.
