Eltham was a medieval royal palace, moated, fortified and not unlike a castle with gardens. Parts were demolished and parts decayed so that little was left when the Courtaulds converted the ruins into a luxurious Art Deco mansion. The 20th century garden is 19 acres in extent and broadly Arts and Crafts. There is a rockery, sunken rose garden and medieval bridge. The moat gives the palace a quiet seclusion.
