A famous Elizabethan mansion (1597) with a much-altered renaissance garden (so that its character is that of the Victorian Mixed Style). There are rectangular courts (compartments') planted with flowering shrubs and herbaceous borders. The herb garden has been recently redesigned. Thomas Hobbes died here.
