Lyon Arboretum by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association to show the value of watershed restoration and test plants of economic value. It became part or the University of Hawai'i in 1953 and the emphasis changed to horticulture. The land was once grazed bare by cattle. Today it is well vegetated and has the character of a botanical garden.

A wild and jungle-like place, just above Honolulu. Wear your good hiking shoes (not sandals like I did the first time!) and try out the very rocky and steep trails uphill through loads of tropical plants and trees, ending at a small waterfall. There is a small, more cultivated area at the parking lot level.
