Gardenvisit Editorial

The garden was made by Bernard McLaughlin, a bank teller and grocery store clerk with a love of plants and no formal horticultural training. The garden has been maintained since his death in 1995 by the McLaughlin Foundation. It is a classic twentieth century plant-lover's garden - with an abundance of flowers, a pleasant house and no strong sense of design. A critic might say that the style is Arts and Crafts but without a strong sense of 'art' or of 'craft'. The McLaughlin Garden features daylilies, astilbes, iris, phlox and hostas.
