Mohenjo Daro Tank Garden

The city of Mohenjo Daro was occupied c2600-1900 BCE and was one of the main cities of the Indus Valley Civilization, now in the province of Sind, Pakistan. It was built on a ridge in the flood plain of the River Indus. Construction was in mud brick and the layout was on a grid. A large water tank, known as the Great Bath, was built in a colonnaded courtyard in the centre of Mohenjo Daro. It was lined with brick and waterproofed with tar. The use of the tank is uncertain, because no texts have been deciphered, but like similar tanks throughout the history of India it is likely to have had a religious function and to have served as a water supply. No space within Mohenjo Daro was set aside for gardens but trees may have been planted and the city was surrounded by land used for cultivation which would have been gardens in the sense of 'land cultivated by horticultural techniques'.
