The Morton Arboretum was founded by Joy Morton (1855-1934),the owner of a salt company. Charles Sprague Sargent of the Arnold Arboretum recommended landscape architect O.C. Simonds for the design. Clarence Godshalk, also a landscape architect, became director in 1939 and followed the naturalistic style established of Simonds. Within this framework are theme gardens, including the Fragrance Garden, Ground Cover Garden, and Joy Path.
