The Saadian Tombs were built in the time of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur (1578-1603), of the Saadi dynasty. Moulay Ismail sealed up the entrances to the tombs and they were largely forgotten until 1917. In addition to the two principle mausoleums, there are over 100 tombs scattered around the gardens, marked with gravestones decorated with coloured tiles.
