Privy Councillor Johan von Bülow, who was Lord Chamberlain to Crown Prince Frederik, purchased the Sanderumgaard estate in 1793. Bülow took great personal interest in the development of the garden. Much of the land was alder swamp and had to be drained before work on the garden could start. A network of canals was then created to hold the water. Two pavillions, Tankefuld (Thoughtful) and Sommerlyst (Summer’s delight), survive from the original design.
