The Shadows on the Teche was built in the 1830s by wealth sugarcane growers, David and Mary Weeks. The Bayou Teche is a twisting waterway ("teche" means snake in the Chitimacha language) that was the main course of the Mississippi River before it changed course around 2000 BC. The property is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Boxwood hedges separate the garden into rooms: a square garden, round garden and naturalistic garden.
