The garden (250 ha.) was founded by Panama Canal Company in 1923. Like Carribean botanical gardens it was intended to be a research station for the Tropical Flora of Panama. It is now a zoo and botanical garden.

A botanic garden is the safest place to see Panama's plants. This is what I read about visiting the rainforest: "Kidnapping for ATM extortion is a big sport in Panama. They kidnap you and then take you to ATM machine daily. You withdraw cash up to your daily limit. When the money runs out they call your wife to fill up the bank account. If she delays, they send her pictures of you with some body parts already cut out. In the end they kill you and dump you in the jungle."
