A former estate, and private zoo, belonging to Guy Phinney, was purchased by the City of Seattle in 1883. They comissisoned a design from the Olmsted Brothers. The Rose Garden, in a woodland setting, was a later design (not by the Olmsteds). It has a geometrical design with an axis. With hybrid teas, miniatures, climbers, tree roses, David Austens and All-America winners, there are over 290 varieties of rose and over 5,000 plants. Restoration of the Bas-relief and the historical water features was completed in 2006. The garden is one of only 24 All-America Rose Selections Test Gardens in the United States.
