French landscape painter. Claude Gellee was born in Lorraine but moved to Italy as a young man. He became interested in light, ruins, coastal scenery and classical mythology. His paintings display a picturesque vision of ancient Rome and evoke a golden age in which man lived in perfect harmony with nature. Some of his themes were drawn from Ovid. Claude was greatly admired in England.
