Domenico Fontana was an Italian architect and engineer . Working for Pope Sixtus V be played an important part in the rebuilding of Rome according to the baroque idea of avenues connecting focal points. Fontana designed the Lateran palace (1588) and parts of the Vatican, notably the library (1588). In 1586 erected the Egyptian obelisk in front of St. Peter's and completed the dome of St. Peter's.
