Amreica's first president was a wealthy landowner with a great interest in the layout of his estate at Mount Vernon. His family came from Sulgrave Manor in England. At the age of 14 he became a surveyor and made trips into the then wilderness. In 1752 he inherited his brother's estate and became involved with the layout of the estate. It has original features but is broadly in the Forest Style which flourished in England during the first half of the eighteenth century.
