English poet who wrote many books on country life and sporting pursuits - with some references to gardens. He had served as a soldier and also wrote on the art of war, on horsemanship and veterinary skills. His best known book on country pursuits was 'A Way to get Wealth' (1631-8) contains treatises on agriculture and horticulture. Markham is said to have imported the first Arab horse into England.
