King James II was the second son of Charles II. He was crowned after his father's death, in 1685. When he showed marked Roman Catholic sympathies he was replaced by William III (his son-in-law), after what became known as the Glorious Revolution of 1688. James II then became a pensioner of Louis XIV in France
