German art historian and archaeologist who influenced the appreciation of Greek and Italian art. He converted to Roman Catholicism and became librarian at the Vatican. His History of the Art of the Ancients (Geschichte der Kunst der Alterthums) was published in 1764. Winckleman was the son of a shoemaker and the founder of the modern study of ancient Greece. He was murdered by an Italian thief.
