Johnston, Lawrence

American garden owner/designer. Vita Sackville-West wrote that 'The combination of botanical knowledge and aesthetic taste is by no means axiomatic, but Major Johnston possessed it in the highest degree'. Lawrence Johnston designed the garden at Hidcote Manor, advised on the design and planting of his neighbour's garden, Kiftsgate Court Gardens, and designed another famous garden, Serre de la Madone in the south of France.  Hidcote Manor is one of the most popular gardens owned by Britain's National Trust.
