English antiquarian, author and land owner. Sitwell collected antiquities and made an Italian garden at Renishaw Hall. His book On the Making of Gardens was published in 1909 and 1949. Sitwell stated that 'I must ask anyone entering the house never to contradict me or differ from me in any way, as it interferes with the functioning of my gastric jouces and prevents my sleeping at night'. Sitwell purchased Castello di Montegufoni, in Italy, in 1909 and restored the garden. His children became famous: Osbert, Sacheverell and Edith.
