The lake is fed by 72 famous springs. The edges were dammed in the Sung Dynasty, by the city's scholar-governor, and became the setting for pavilions and gardens with many famous scenes (eg Lixia Pavilion, Beiji Tower and Huipo Pavilion). Ti Po wrote that 'Around the gleaming lotus flowers, green green willows; around the softly singing lake, the verdant city'.
